First meeting of the Independent Metropolitan Local Government Review Panel
16 August 2011
The Independent Metropolitan Local Government Review panel, recently appointed by the Minister for local Government, met for the first time at UWA on August 15.
The Panel, chaired by UWA Vice Chancellor Professor Alan Robson, considered its approach to the task of determining the most effective local government structures and governance models for Perth’s future.
Professor Robson said the Panel was aware of the size of the task before it, but looked forward to undertaking the review process and providing advice on achievable options to the Minister in June 2012.
“The Panel plans to produce an Issues Paper which will be widely circulated throughout the community to get input and comment,” he said.
“To coincide with the period for public comment, the Panel will convene public forums to provide community members with an opportunity to have a say.”
A website will also be developed to publish the research papers generated for the Panel as well as submissions received and links to other relevant sites.
“It is important that the Panel’s review process be comprehensive and transparent,” Professor Robson said.
”That is why we are committed to putting up as much information on the web as possible and generating as much feedback and input as possible.”
The Panel will also commission research into key aspects of metropolitan governance.
Professor Robson said it was clear that the review must look at the factors transforming Perth now and into the future.
“We need to consider as well national and international experience, but with a focus on what will be in the best interests of metropolitan Perth,” he said.
“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a transformation of our local government scene.”
